Mattel to make a pretty yet tough Katniss Barbie doll:
In a move that will probably both delight and confuse Hunger Games fans, Mattel has announced that they will be producing a Katniss Everdeen Barbie doll, complete with a mockingjay pin and a bow and arrows. Mattel Barbie designer Bill Greening said that he “chose to dress her in the outfit she wears during the games, since this is where all the non-stop action takes place and is instantly recognizable by fans. Of course, she wears her mockingjay pin proudly on her lapel.” He continued to say that "the doll’s minimalistic style and details — such as her loosely braided hair and makeup-free look — also really embody the heroic character." I mean, the doll definitely has makeup on, but okay.
The idea of this doll existing is probably going to divide a lot of people. On the one hand, having a doll of a girl who is fighting for her right to live after living an impoverished life is sort of strange, especially since the Hunger Games books so vehemently vilify excess and luxury living, which is something that Barbie sort of embodies, or at least connotes. On the other hand, as a toy that young girls (like my four year old niece) might play with, at least she is wearing boots and pants and has a weapon. In my opinion, as a concept, the Katniss Barbie is rather strange, but simply as a doll, she's pretty okay. What does everybody else think?
